Page wasn't inspired by Bert's arrangement - he pinched it wholesale! Bert took the melody that Anne Briggs sang and came up with an unique arrangement. When did Jimmy find a folk melody and arrange it in the unique way? Never! He simply stole from Bert and Davy!

There are a lot of people out there that don't understand the concept of arrangements! One poster mentioned Jimi Hendrix's version of Hey Joe. What's that got to do with the price of fish! Hendrix didn't write the song, and - as far as I know - didn't pinch someone else's arrangement.

I understand that the tune is folk, but Page clearly got his inspiration from Bert's arrangement. I'm sure that legally this is okay, but I feel that it is disrespectful to a fellow musician on the part of Page for not at least giving some manner of credit to Jansch. It is just the right thing to do.

Watching this video, I can't help but wonder: was he stoned? He certainly looks the part.

Christ guys, its folk, its out there for all. Is Hendrix a plagiarist for using what is essentially Tim Rose's Hey Joe?

Beautiful arrangement of a traditional Irish tune...but then, that's what Jansch does best! Cleaner than Page, I think, although Page did a good job and he was the one who made it famous.

hate to say it jimmy... but you pulled another "dazed and confused" tactic on this song... love all songs by the group ledzeppelin and this guy himself, but some writers like this one here didn't get the credit they deserve thanks to jimmy...

Arrangements of traditional songs can be copywrited. If Bert had sued Jimmy, I'm sure he would have won a nice settlement; as did Martin Carthy when he sued Paul Simon over the arrangement of "Scarborough Fair".

Back in the 60s, lots of guitarists built upon Bert's work. My favourite was Dave Evans. Check him out by typing in "Dave Evans Stagefright" in the seach box.
